  • Made it to the top (well...at least the top of where the tracks are done to. heheheh). From this point forward I still have some bench and track work to complete. I'm hoping to get that done up here soon. <br />

As I write this the upper level mainline has been completed (I still have to finish up the 7 switches at the CF&I plant). So it's just a matter of linking the two.
  • The first engine up the hill!! For the most part, everything worked like a charm. I only had to tweak 1 of the switches because the points were just a little too close.
  • A few weeks (ahem...err...months) have gone by and I have now got the Garfield switchbacks all completed. Trackwork was pretty straight forward and took about 5 days to complete. The small 'white' areas on the switches at gaps that I have been filled in with Styrene but haven't been cut down yet.

  • The division of the Maysville area. I intentionally left the backdrop 'sticks' long so that I could mount lighting on the upper surfaces as needed. Again, this facia goes up 30" from the lowest point.
  • The facia blocking the Garfield Switchbacks and the Maysville are now installed and give a nice divide to the very close sections.
  • Jump forward a few months and now I have started to put facia up on the Maysville area. I'm gearing up for a layout tour with my railroad club and want the area's to be dressed up a bit more before guests arrive. This gives a good idea on what I want to accomplish with this area. Exiting from the wall, I am planning on making a snow shed in this area.
  • The 'tunnel' through the wall. I have such a great wife she left me cut a hole in the wall to run my trains through. :)
  • Completed Maysville Peninsula (well...completed with rail. HA!) From this perspective you can see how much of a climb that this is. The increase goes from 36" off the floor to 48" above.
  • This is the Maysville siding. The idea is if any doubling of the hill need to take place that the second section of the train will wait here. As of March 3rd, this area is complete and I have been running over the area, with great success.
  • Mine area that I mentioned before. Just to the left of the switch area will also be a river that will cut across the scene, from back to front.
  • Track that will link up with Salida.
  • Some of the track area that Mark worked on. This will be a tunnel portal along with some large rocky outcroppings.
  • This is the down grade slope heading towards Salida. This is also the area that will 'switchback' up to the upper level. All trains going up to the second level will originate from Salida, which will ensure that the trains area going the correct direction up the hill.
  • Mark is working on laying some rail. This area that he is working on is what will be the mine area. Hopefully I will be able to make a pretty good mine, that will take up a lot of this area.
  • Larger view of the complete island area. Note the transition track into the upper tunnel portal.
