Textures!
Note the textures in the terrain. Nothing is uniform in nature...so lets not do this on our layouts.
The dirt for the 'ballast' is a combination of ground dirt and cinders picked up on the old right of ways on the Marshall Pass line. Same goes for the rocks you see....
