Mears Junction Bridge - Details Again

Another good view of the creosote streaking. Also, a good shot of the metal caps put on top of the pile caps. This was done so as to prevent hot embers from the steam engines burning down the bridge. Pay no mind that they didn't do this on any other surfaces (go figure!)

 • Mark works on a few more pieces of the grid in this area. This shot gives a good idea on how tight we did the grid. It was pretty much just winging it, but I think that it turned out pretty good.
 • My brother Mark helps me install the grid on the layout. For the grids I used Drywall Shims (found in the drywall section of any hardware store that sells drywall). I ended up cutting the shims in half to make them a little more useable. To anchor in place....the ole tried and true method....hot glue gun. (Word for the wise...apparently HOT GLUE comes out of the end of this gun! Who Knew!)

I think that both Mark and me were pleasantly surprised at how stable the grid gets when you get done.

In the distance the rest of the mountain is in place, ready for plaster cloth (more to come on that).
 • A little further and now with the tunnel portal in place, I'm at a point where I am happy with the basic shape before plastering.

For the tunnel liner I was able to put a little texture to the rocks by using an x-acto knife, flicking off small pieces to get the rough shape desired.

And yes...I made sure my NMRA gauge was at hand so there will not be any clearance issues.

 • Thar be MOUNTAINS!
 • I used 2" pink foam bought from my local Home Depot to do the structure of my mountains. This was a total guess on thickness, but proved to be sufficient in shaping. (I should say that I learned long ago from a club member to get the pink or blue foam, because the white stuff is just to coarse when shaping).

To anchor these shapes I'm using liquid nails. Drying time is a little longer, but once dry...things do NOT move.
 • Ah here......we go!
